Global renewable energy experts said Turkey could become self sufficient in energy production if it incorporates advanced energy generation technologies. The experts, gathering in Istanbul for the Ninth World Wind Energy Conference and Renewable Energy Exhibition, said that sufficient investment in renewable energy sources could eventually allow Turkey to become an energy exporter, Hurriyet reported Tuesday.
International Renewable Energy Agency Director General Helene Pelosse told delegates, “The global renewable energy industry is booming and over 500,000 jobs are expected to be created in the next few years.”
World Wind Energy Association Vice President Tanay S?dk? Uyar observed, “Turkey presents a very important investment opportunity,” adding that renewable energy is “best for Turkey, best for Europe and best for the world. What’s missing is the will of governments.”
Turkey imports 70 percent of its energy needs and at present produces only a small percentage from renewable sources, while demand continues to grow by 8 percent per year.
